Originally meant by Michael Stipe as a "break up" song, I felt it also works as an inner critique...sort of an argument between two sides of my personality...the critical part that says nothing's ever good enough, that I'll never succeed, and the child with no defense and no protection against that abusive inner parent.
To me the title and music composition is classic Americana. It reflects my journey through the world, both physically -- I was born in Japan and have lived in some 10 states before I settled in California over 20 years ago -- and emotionally -- the song has a theme of longing and isolation that I identify with.
I'm also fairly techy, and I thought the word feedback ties in well with that side. |
